Distanced Learning Tips

17/9/2020

As many students are forced to transition into distanced learning, many kids find themselves stuck behind a screen.  In the United States, many schools have started the school year with remote learning, while others are starting with a hybrid of remote and in-person learning.  As cases continue to rise, most schools will probably stick with distanced learning.

After my first week of distanced learning, I discovered some great tips and tricks to maximize my distanced learning experience.

  1. Find a quiet spot in your house.  Designate this place as your study corner.  Finding a quiet place with no distractions can help you focus on your studies, helping you concentrate better.
  2. Find a desk to sit at.  Instead of sitting up in bed, find a desk to sit.  Wearing your PJs and staying in bed gives you a feeling of downtime and nap time.  By finding a desk to sit at while in class, you’ll be more focused and concentrated.
  3. If using a tablet, don’t place it flat on your desk.  When using Zoom, your teachers will only see your nostrils.  Not a pleasant view for your classmates and teachers.
  4. Prepare your camera with a test Zoom. One mistake that most students make is that they don’t do a test Zoom before they enter their official classroom Zoom.  However, many kids may discover that they aren’t centered in the middle of the screen or their camera reveals a pile of dirty laundry that you’re too lazy to wash.
  5. Eat breakfast.  Many kids don’t eat breakfast before school starts.  If you don’t eat breakfast, you are more likely to get distracted.  If you’re trying to lose weight by skipping breakfast, skipping breakfast will not have an effect.  According to Time, skipping breakfast does not help you lose weight.
  6. Have a bottle of water on your desk.  During Zoom meetings, it is extremely important to stay hydrated.  Placing a water bottle on your desk reminds you to stay hydrated and healthy.
  7. Take breaks.  In between Zoom meetings, taking breaks are super important.  Zoom burnout is real and will make you feel fatigue.  Walk around your house.  During lunch break, if you have time, walk the dog or take a brief walk outside.
  8. Do some exercise afterwards.  After sitting in a chair all day long, that isn’t very good for you.  Teenagers need to exercise daily for an hour.  While you may have gotten to walk around the hallways or play a game of basketball during lunch, you can’t do that anymore because of remote learning.  After the school day ends, go out for a walk.  I love to go biking, if the weather permits.  Biking is an easy and relaxing activity that can help you stay healthy.

When school starts, be sure to exercise and stretch your legs in between Zoom calls.  Zoom burnout is real and exhaustion is never a good thing.

Thanks for the tips! I do eat breakfast and try to get up! The tip about the PJ's is so true. Some students need to listen to this part!

It is great to see these tips all collated and listed in one place. Thank you!!!
I have two teenagers; one 17-year-old who was in her last year of high school and off to 'varsity in 27 days’ time and one 19-year-old who was 2nd Year Laws last year. Both had to study using online learning only for a sizeable chunk of last year. Both found this challenging and we were largely unable to help beyond the general life and study experience we have accumulated over the years. As parents, we felt vulnerable and helpless, incredibly worried for the future of our children and their whole generation!!!!
Thankfully, they have both come through unscathed though our daughter will get her final results today and there is always that little bit of doubt in the back of your mind!!! I, personally, feel indebted to them both for their wholly adult approach to their perilous study situation and their uncertain future!!! I, personally, feel that they have been robbed of a large chunk of their future because of circumstances beyond their control, beyond any of our control.
Which brings me to the point of this comment: Students, after a certain age, have to take responsibility for their own study and its outcomes as much as they possibly can, regardless of the circumstances of their situation. This has always been the case, of course, it is just that the pandemic has brought this into stark relief for all! Success is not a given! Even scraping a pass is not a given! They NEVER were!!!! Distance Learning has merely made spoon-fed learning impossible, THANK GOODNESS and whilst having a poor teacher has always been a major disadvantage to any student as the final results are released later today, for our senior high school students and so many hopes and dreams are crushed as a result, for too many, the home truth that poor teaching is irrelevant for their future lives now, will be coming home to roost in an incredibly brutal fashion which I find incredibly sad!!!!
Obviously, I am hoping that that will not be the case for our daughter (and I do not believe it will be) but unless she gains stellar results, I will always feel she's been robbed of some portion of her future and at the same time, proud because I know that she did get out of bed each day to put the hard yards into her study as best as circumstances and her own strength of character allowed her to do.
As I look toward the next few hours with a great deal of trepidation (Understatement of the century!!!) I would like to wish ALL students of my country, New Zealand, the VERY BESTEST with their results and I would like to urge ALL students throughout the world to take the most pragmatic approach they possibly can to their studies and GET THE JOB DONE, for without even the teensiest scrap of exaggeration, your future happiness DEPENDS ON YOU, ALONE!!!!! DON’T waste ANY chances!!!! Take responsibility and RUN WITH IT!!!!!
Thank you for the opportunity to read your article and to make this comment! I REALLY appreciate it!!!
