Online relationships

21/8/2016

Online relationships are an increasing thing within teens in our society. 29% of teenagers are “more than friends” with someone online.
From my own experiences a lot of people in an online relationship don’t tell their parents until it’s a few months or even a year.
There are a lot of dangers when it comes to online dating especially for teenagers. Not everyone is who they say they are, make sure you know a lot about someone before getting into a relationship and make sure you see their face.
Don’t get too attached. That sounds weird talking about relationships but if it’s online your more prone to a bad breakup/cheating/lying. Online relationships are a lot easier to break up than normal face to face.
Being a person that’s been in more than 1 online relationship I have some “tips” on dealing with them.

  1. Keep an open mind- Even if everything seems “perfect” it’s probably not so be careful.
  2. Remember you both have separate lives- You don’t see each other every day so don’t expect him/her to be there constantly like real life.
  3. Remember it isn’t like the movies- Fights are a lot tougher and there’s more work needed to keep them strong but that shouldn’t matter if you love the person.
  4. It helps to communicate- Talking about problems and working them out together applies in an online relationship more than a normal one.
  5. Remember to make sure your feelings are there- Don’t string someone on because honestly you can get more emotionally attached to someone in an online relationship than in real life because your heart yearns for them to be with you.

Being a person who has been in a few online relationships I’ve experienced a lot and have found those tips to be extremely helpful.

Online relationships can be one of the most beautiful things to see because what’s not beautiful and romantic about falling in love with someone online and having to deal with not seeing them every day? But they can also tear at people and cause horrible heartbreak and in worst case scenarios depression.

If you are thinking about being in one or are in one keep an open mind about everything and make sure it feels right and comfortable.
